Frequently Asked Questions - Advising
Who is this for? What makes for a good “fit” between students and FLOW Education?
FLOW isn’t for every student. We find that our most successful students are those who are open to thinking outside the typical college process/future planning box. FLOW is a great fit for students who want to be carefully and compassionately challenged, are open to being vulnerable, and excited to grapple with nuanced questions and topics.
When should my student start working with FLOW Education? Is there a typical age group?
We love working with high school students of any age. We often work with a lot of seniors who are in the thick of the college process, but we also work with younger students who are just starting to think of what’s ahead.
How will your work benefit my student?
We help students find their voice so they can be bold agents in shaping their future trajectory.
FLOW challenges students to examine their values and identify what truly matters to them. Our advising helps hone important skills such as critical thinking, storytelling, time management, planning, self-advocacy, self-confidence, and grit. We support students to apply personal insights and strengths to the college, career, and future planning process.
How is FLOW different than typical college and future advising?
Unlike a lot of traditional college and future advising services, FLOW cares as much about the process as we do the results. Our support goes far beyond crafting a thoughtful application and finding a great college. Our holistic and individualized approach combines customized sessions, critical thinking, and self-reflection to help students meaningfully explore their educational and future paths. We believe that students need to better understand who they are and what they value to be successful in making important life decisions.
What is your teaching style? What does a typical lesson look like?
FLOW curriculum is all about digging deep and connecting theory to practice. Our non-conventional model creatively combines elements from current events, podcasts, TED Talks, and memes. A typical lesson may include things like a mock admissions exercise or even the occasional miniaturized escape room. Our philosophical approach encourages critical inquiry and introspection to increase engagement in the college and future planning processes.
How many sessions do you recommend?
We recommend a minimum of 6-8 sessions, but often work with students for multiple semesters 1-2 times per week based on their needs. The frequency and length of sessions are based on your student’s goals and needs.
Do you recommend individual or group advising? How are groups formed?
Either option is great. Both individual and group advising have their advantages: a group environment can be helpful for students to learn from and share with their peers, while one-on-one advising allows for a more tailored, customized experience.
Families often sign up as a group of 2-5 students and we are available to meet in locations that work for you and your cohort.
How are parents involved in the process?
At FLOW, we know most students wouldn’t be where they are today without the help and support of their parents along the way. Though advising sessions are only for students, we place a great value on positive parental engagement and welcome any questions/concerns that may arise throughout our work together.
